ratify contract
WINNIPEG — Workers at
Family Dynamics — who are
members of the Manitoba Gov-
ernment and General Employ-
ees' Union (MGEU), Local 212
— ratified a new two-year agree-
ment on Aug. 28.
The employees provide coor-
dinated, community-based sup-
ports for Winnipeg families.
Improvements include better
leave, wellness days and stream-
lined grievances, said the union.
Whitehorse
Save-On-
Foods workers
sign fi rst deal
WHITEHORSE — United Food
and Commercial Workers Cana-
da (UFCW) Local 1518 members
working at the new Save-On-
Foods store in Whitehorse, Yu-
kon, ratified their first-ever col-
lective bargaining agreement on
Aug. 29.
Located beside the Yukon
River, the grocery store employs
more than 180 UFCW Local
1518 members in a wide variety
of occupations.
"The agreement is by far the
best collective bargaining agree-
ment in the retail food industry
in the Yukon," said Patrick John-
son, UFCW Local 1518 execu-
tive assistant.
"Members were excited with
the collective agreement and are
happy it was implemented since
day one of the store being open,"
according to Johnson.
UFCW Canada Local 1518
represents more than 20,000
members working in a diverse
range of industries.
Unionized workers at UFCW
include both retail food and in-
dustrial food processing, com-
munity health services, seasonal
agriculture employees and pro-
fessional services members, ac-
cording to the union.
Polar Pak
workers
join UFCW
BRAMPTON, Ont. — More
than 700 workers at Polar Pak
in Brampton, Ont., are amongst
the newest members of United
Food and Commercial Work-
ers Canada (UFCW) Local 175
after a majority voted to join the
union on Aug. 26.
Spread over five different fa-
cilities in Brampton, Polar Pak
manufactures plastic contain-
ers, serving-ware and cutlery for
the food service, food processor,
bakery, grocery, catering, take-
out, retail and hospitality mar-
kets. The union said it plans to
soon begin bargaining with the
employer.
PNE, CUPE
reach tentative
contract
VANCOUVER, — The Pacific
National Exhibition (PNE) and
the Canadian Union of Public
Employees (CUPE) Local 1004
— which represents about 3,300
full- and part-time workers —
agreed to a tentative deal on Aug
31.
The tentative agreement runs
from Jan. 1, 2017, to Dec. 31,
2020 and includes:
• wage increases of 1.5 per cent,
rising to two per cent in 2019
• improvements to benefits plans
• increases to employee wages
that exceed minimum wage
• improved seniority for part-
time workers.
