Forestry worker wins grievance
but estoppel granted in B.C.
AN ENGINEER working as a
lower-rated classification was
paid less than he felt he should
have been, so he grieved his treat-
ment.
Cody Ketchum was offered the
job of fireman in March 2016 at
the Mackenzie, B.C., lumber-pro-
cessing plant of Conifex Timber.
The job required employees to
burn excess wood-waste products
which created power for the plant.
Ketchum was paid $33.92 per
hour while working as a fireman.

AN OPERATOR at the Akzo Nobel specialty
chemicals plant in Saskatoon was terminated on
the same day he was participating in company-or-
dered counselling for "inappropriate" behaviour.
Kevin Murr worked for the company for 18
years with no discipline on his record except for a
warning regarding an incident in 2016.
On Nov. 15, 2016, Murr was directed by Louis
Knaus, operations manager, to clean up a chemi-
cal spill with another worker. Later in the lunch-
room, he approached Ila Klassen, plant manager,
about the incident and Murr said he shouldn't
have received blame for the spill.
