SURREY, B.C. — Striking Unifor, Local 3000 members, working at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel in Surrey, B.C., voted 92 per cent in favour of a new three-year collective agreement on May 28, ending a four-week strike. The new collective agreement includes reduced workloads for room attendants, a $0.40-per-hour increase to maintain current benefit levels and wage increases of up to eight per cent during the term of the agreement, according to Unifor. OCEU requests 'no board' report TORONTO — On May 28, the union representing 140 em- ployees at the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA) said they have reached a crossroads and requested a "no board" report from the Ontario Ministry of Labour. "We believe the two sides are close to an agreement, but it became clear to us that we are now at a crossroads," said Harry Goslin, president of the On- tario Compensation Employees Union (OCEU), Local 1750, of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). IHSA provides health and safety training, audit and evalu- ation services to a range of On- tario employers and employees who perform high-risk activi- ties, such as construction, elec- trical work, dangerous goods transport and utility line clear- ing, said the union. The ministry issues a no board report when one of the parties to a labour negotiation believes that the sides have reached an impasse and requests the report. From the date of issue, the par- ties then have 17 days before a lockout or strike can occur, ac- cording to CUPE. The ministry expected to is- sue the report by the end of the week of June 4, and a lockout or strike deadline is expected on or around June 12, said the union. Steelworkers ratify 5-year contract with IOC LABRADOR CITY, N.L. — United Steelworkers (USW) members in Labrador City, N.L., ratified a five-year collec- tive agreement with the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) on May 28, ending a nine-week strike. More than 1,300 members of USW, Locals 5795 and 6731 will return to work over the next sev- eral days, following ratification votes in which about 80 per cent of members approved new con- tracts, said the union. USW, Local 5795 members voted 79 per cent in favour of their collective agreement, while Local 6731 approved their con- tract by an 89 per cent majority, said the union. The workers at IOC's Labra- dor West operations had been on strike since March 26, said USW. The new collective agree- ments include increases in medical benefit coverage, wages and pensions, as well as other improvements, according to Ron Thomas, president of the 1,300-member USW Local 5795.
