Fort McMurray, Alta., cook
alleges underpayment for work
WHEN THE managing chef at a
work camp was away, a first cook
filled in for him and was paid as a
chef, but the temporary designa-
tion was not enough to prevent
the cook from being permanently
laid off in 2015.
Mani Kanniappan first worked
at the Albian Sands Village site
north of Fort McMurray, Alta.,
in 2014 for Great West Catering.
On days when Craig Mackintosh,
chef/manager, took off (the staff
worked on a 21-days-on, 7-days-
off schedule) Kanniappan filled
in for him and he was paid at the

AFTER SHE launched a complaint of sexual ha-
rassment against a male colleague, a female prison
guard felt management didn't do enough to pro-
tect her, leading to her resignation.
Jylian MacLeod began work at the Fort Smith
Correctional Centre (FSCC) in Fort Smith,
N.W.T., as a casual corrections officer in 2010,
eventually becoming a relief corrections officer.
On Feb. 20, 2012, MacLeod filed a sexual ha-
rassment complaint against coworker Wilfred
Paulette. The report came back on May 11 and
found her complaint was valid.
As part of a settlement, MacLeod was not sup-
posed to work on the men's wing of the FSCC,
which was designed to keep her out of contact
with Paulette. As well, he was not allowed to go to
the women's wing.
On June 4, 2012, MacLeod and the Union of
Northern Workers (UNW) filed a grievance al-
leging management breached article 55 of the
